Food storage is extra food in your pantry that you use, it’s not just to store. Basically you build your own grocery store in your kitchen. Ideally, your food storage would be ‘shelf stable’, which means that it does not require refrigeration to keep it fresh.
Your food storage is your insurance policy against food supply disruption. For example, our food supply chain can be disrupted at any time by weather and pandemic, as we’ve all just experienced. However, it also can be disrupted by unemployment, health problems, or our own busy schedules!
Firstly, this is my own FREE customized plan of how to build a very solid emergency supply of food for only $5/week. PRINT THIS OUT and take it with you when shopping. Then, follow the food suggestion purchase for each week. After that, follow my food storage tips & tricks below to maintain your food storage. Finally, you will see how quickly you have built up a sustainable and healthy food storage system!
To clarify, this shopping list works on a 20 week cycles… which means that the plan repeats every 20 weeks. Consequently, this shopping list fits any budget from $5/week upward!
Since food costs and availability vary regionally, set your weekly budget to an amount that works best for you. For example: week one is canned tuna. That is to say, if you have $5 to spend on food storage this week, buy as much canned tuna as you can for $5, etc.
These are 20 week cycles that repeat. Subsequently, at the end of 52 weeks, you will have amassed a good sized amount of food storage.
Firstly, you need to only buy foods that you will eat and with which you are already familiar. Food storage does you no good if you don’t know how to cook with it or you don’t like it.
Secondly, it is also very important to rotate your emergency food supply forward so that you are always aware of the expiration dates and are following the preppers “first in, first out” rule of eating. This way, you will never have expired foods in your food storage.
Most importantly, before you go to the grocery store, first “shop” from your food storage. Whatever items you “shop” from your food supply, replace on your new shopping trip. Be sure to go ahead and follow the FREE Food Storage Shopping List and continue to stock your food storage.
Use a permanent marker and write the item name & expiration date on the top of each can or food item. This makes rotating your food forward for freshness very quick and easy.
Store your food in your house, not in the garage or shed or attic. It’s very important that your food be stored at the same temperature as your house. This will keep your food fresh as long as possible.

Wanting to reclaim my laundry room, without spending any money… Did you ever paint every wall in your house with a color that you then realized you were totally done with? Like, I totally did that….!!!
I painted every room in my entire house a tan paperbag color that I just LOVED, until I didn’t.
After spending an hour shopping online for super cute ideas (self adhesive wallpaper, yes please!) I decided to go the “NO SPEND decorating route”… and just used the white paint I had leftover congealing in my garage:
